Pavilion KL Excites Shoppers With Waku Waku Japan Festival

July 14, 2016

KUALA LUMPUR, 14 JULY 2016

Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s premier shopping destination, today celebrated its very first Waku Waku Japan Festival, held in conjunction with award-winning Japanese dedicated precinct – Tokyo Street’s 5th Anniversary. Derived from the Japanese word to express excitement, Waku Waku Japan Festival represents a month long festival which brings shoppers First-in-Malaysia experiences, including the first pop-up stores by popular Japanese shopping mall, atré; Disney Tsum Tsum and mt masking tape, who will be launching Malaysia-edition washi tape exclusively for Pavilion KL shoppers.

The Waku Waku Japan Festival was officially launched by Mr. Kodama Yoshinori, Minister of Japan Embassy of Malaysia and Ms Joyce Yap, Chief Executive Officer of Retail, Pavilion KL, with an engaging Senbon Sakura Dance that ignited the summer festivity mood in the crowd. In an ode to Japanese tradition, a sake breaking ceremony known as ‘Kagami Biraki’ was done to symbolise good fortune and celebrations, before continuing on with a cake-cutting ceremony to commemorate the anniversary.

Patrons of Pavilion KL were then mesmerised by a special ‘Japanese Summer Dance Fiesta’ where they were invited to dance along. Also deemed the ‘Happy Dance’ by the Japanese, the performance saw shoppers and dancers moving along to the music in traditional Japanese Yukatas and Hapi coats – it was a truly colourful sight.

Ms Joyce Yap said, “This is a special year for us as it is the first time we create a month-long of Japanese-themed activities in conjunction with our Tokyo Street 5th Anniversary. These days, people no longer go to the mall to seek what they need or what they want, they visit the mall to experience what they have to. We will continue to enhance our tenant mix by bringing in new retailers and experiences, so as to create more excitement and valued memories to our shoppers. We want to thank the Japan Embassy, key organisations, tenants and loyal shoppers for their continued support in fostering our community and creating an authentic Japanese experience for all.”

Guests were led into the Centre Court following the performance, where they witnessed for the first time outside of Japan, the pop-up store of atré. In a short but comprehensive tour, guests discovered the atré Snow Café and over 30 never-before-seen Japanese brands, ranging from beauty, fashion, F&B and lifestyle. The atré pop-up store will be at the Centre Court, level 2 for a limited time only, till 24 July 2016.

One of the most popular selling toys to come out of Japan, the adorable Disney Tsum Tsum – a range of collectible plush baby Disney characters; comes to life at Pavilion KL from now to 14 August 2016. Shoppers will have an opportunity to collect their favourite Disney characters, from childhood classics like Winnie The Pooh and Mickey Mouse.

In addition, shoppers can also look forward to the mt masking tape pop-up store, happening from 27 July to 7 August 2016 at the Centre Court level 2. With its unique colours and patterns, distinctive texture, exceptional characteristics and the simplicity of use, the mt masking tape has become extremely popular in Japan and around the world. At this first pop-up store, the Centre Court and Spanish Steps will be the first in Malaysia to be taped and decorated in the renowned Washi tape – offering a true sight to behold. Shoppers can also get their hands on the popular Washi tape at the store, including Malaysia-themed limited edition tapes made exclusively for the event.

The Waku Waku Japan Festival celebration runs from now to 14 August 2016. Experience excitement while shopping this summer festival! Be rewarded with gifts and treats with RM100 spent at Tokyo Street, or RM300 spent in a single receipt at specialty stores from 29 July to 2 August 2016. Spend RM500 in a single receipt at specialty stores and stand to win a 5D/4N holiday package with H.I.S. Travel, including two ANA Business Class Air Tickets and 5-star accommodation.
